Welcome to Llandudno Junction!
Browse the pictures and let yourself drift back to the glorious summer of 1961 when a procession of Black 5s, Jubs, Pats, Scots, Standard 5s and many others could be seen heading along the north Wales coast carrying holidaymakers and day-trippers to the resorts, the principal one of which was Llandudno.
I was there on holiday that year as a schoolboy (although sadly we travelled by car!) and I have vivid memories and a few fuzzy b&w photos of the many and varied trains that were to be seen in the area. To see the photos and other wonderful memories do visit Geoff Poole's site at: www.6g.nwrail.org.uk
So it was that twenty years later I embarked on the construction of the '00' gauge layout of the Junction and a much shortened branch to Llandudno station, with the Blaenau Ffestiniog branch divergence, a project which was to take twelve years to reach completion. The plan was to be able to operate the original timetable as authentically as possible, with reasonably realistic diagramming of locomotives and DMUs.
The layout is not portable and so has not been displayed at any exhibition. It has, however, appeared in 'Model Rail' magazines Nos.11, 22 and 125, and also featured in 'Model Rail' video No.4.
The results of my labours can be seen in the photographs here, most of which have been skilfully taken by fellow-operator and enthusiast of the area Tim Easter. Tim regularly supplies motive power to augment my already considerable fleet of some 150 locomotives, which helps a lot on a busy Saturday when trains are arriving at the Junction every five minutes or so! Many if not most of these we hope to show here in due course, and some of the locos depicted here are his. Do let us know what you think and feel free to ask any questions which may help you with your own project.
A new series began in Model Rail No.131, the June 2009 issue, about how to operate your layout like a real railway - based on my own experience with 'Llandudno Junction'.
Thanks for visiting the site and I hope you enjoy your railway modelling!.
